GENDER INEQUALITY

Yesterday was a great day when we commemorated the people because of who we are here. The people who took us in this universe and bring up us so as to make our own identity in the world, who become the stairs to help us rise to eminence. The one who do everything for us.

Yes, you all are right yesterday we commemorated the part and parcel of our life through a very special day International Women's day. It is pretty good that we have created a day to recall the great people of our life but in my perception all these things are futile.

After the 16-Dec-2012 Nirbhaya rape case, the women of India got into the garb of fear cladded with the fright of humongous amount of barbarity and viciousness been imposed on the innocent Nirbhaya. After that many new revelations of cases of Sexual Harassment, rapes came out which were completely astounding surpassing all limits of humanity. Even the girls of age eight, nine etc. were being raped by the inhuman beasts. Only in Delhi till now from Jan-March 181 Rape cases have been reported comprising of an average of 4 rapes per day which has exceeded the average of last year by double. The barbaric predators of our societies are there hunting for the women but no one is doing anything in this respect.

The whole nation rose in the furore and resentment with the people sitting in the authority but in vain, the fury of people has been crushed to sand and now there is no one now protesting against all these things. In India the same thing takes places every time and when there is no results after some days people go back to their home and again the immoral people commence doing bad things with complete impunity and without getting embarrassed and ashamed of the things that they commit. People resort to protest but their voice is calmed down over time and their voice becomes oblivion.

In the year there are 365 days but all the year excluding the day of 8th march every day (364) day the society harasses women. They are burnt for dowry, they are killed in the womb of their mother (Female Foeticide), they are being trafficked, they are being raped and numerous of societal stigmas are imposed on them.

Let's talk about the condition of women in the National Capital of India, Delhi. The whole Delhi was astonished with the cruelty of the savaged people who raped Nirbhaya. The girl was returning back after watching a movie with a male friend. When they reached Munirka they got no auto, or any bus. Suddenly a bus stops and a man comes out and proffer them both to come in the bus, they both confirmed that the bus is going to reach their destination and sit in the bus. The bus was only having five male passengers and a driver. After some time they started passing pejorative and lewd comments. The male companion of Nirbhaya protested but he was assaulted with an iron road and the girl was raped. The bus passed through many checkposts but no policeman understood the need to check the bus and the culprits committed the crime very brutally. After this crime the whole city flew into the rage of protests and with new vision that something would be done people resorted to protest in front of Raisina hill, the house of president and also rushed to various government offices to protest but nothing happened and notwithstanding coming down the no. of offences against women, the crimes soared with humongous amount, paving way for more and more offences.

The city recorded an enormous increment in the no. of rape cases, sexual harassment and other offences and according to a survey 96% women in the city feel unsafe on city roads after sunset and 94% deem the Delhi unsafe and very unsafe which is a shocking thing for all of us. 47% women consider that it is unsafe to go outside after 08:00pm in city and 62% women have faces misbehaviour on streets. 86% of the women even didn’t report the case to the police.  These figures are very shocking putting all the women in fear. If the women are not feeling safe then what people in authority are doing. This was about the sexual harassment; the figures in other crimes are also not good. In the year 2010 8391 deaths for dowry were recorded while this figure a decade ago had only 6995 cases. Such a sudden and humongous increase is very bad for the women in society. While 48% women feel discriminated in the issues of property division. Cases of female foeticide have also augmented and new figures are not good. Girls have consistently had a higher pass percentage than boys in board exams but still the rate of enrolment of girls are less than that of boy’s. School enrolment for girls in the year 2011-12 was 17.6 lakh while that of boys were 20.2 lakh. Literacy rate is 91% for men and 81% for women, which is very much lower to that of man.  The response from the “Women in distress helpline” (181) and Police Control room (100) is also not satisfactory. Police still is reluctant to lodge FIRs against sexual harassment and is doing a little to prevent crimes.

On the other hand comes a humorous statement from Shiela Dixit, Chief Minister of Delhi, that even her daughter doesn’t feel safe in the city. If even her daughter is not safe in the city then who is and what is she doing. She is in authority and is having the position of Chief Minister of Delhi, if her daughter doesn’t feel safe then this means that she has done nothing for the daughters of city.

Politics never leaves anything undisturbed. This is the right thing. Politicians have also commenced politicising such a sensitive issue. The government has now acted as a moron to do a faux pas. In order to win the elections the government in order to show its sympathy towards the topic and to gain advantage over rivals has started new banks, new post offices, separate buses, separate coaches in trains and have allotted various other things to show that government is ready to help the women. But in my point of view this is completely ridiculous showing the inveterate desires of people of politicising matters. This is just a political move to sequester the woman from man. One day the government will create a separate state for them. The government is isolating women from the rest of society by erecting new workplaces, offices, buses, trains etc. and is making them for introvert and shy, making them credulous and submissive. The government is infusing in women a fright towards the society. Women are an integral as well as indispensable part of our life and therefore separating them from society would just increase the problems and will inhibit the society’s growth. The need of the hour currently is not make separate laws, bills, buses, trains etc. but is to change the mindset of societies, to prepare soldiers who can stand out with women to protect them from the poachers.

People say that Ladies are lacking behind in various field, but I vehemently repudiate their claims, we are having women in field of science, technology, art, literature and especially politics. We are having women in India who can on their will can elect a president, a prime minister and can do anything in the country, who can oppose anything, who can make laws.

But still nothing is being done for the women by the people in authority and that’s why the criminals commit the crimes sans impunity and are at large. The crime is pervading covering the country with its huge black penumbra of sorrows and grievances that will one day if not stopped would curb the sun of knowledge and happiness from spreading rays of joy in our lives.

Hope that the things will change. People will understand the need of today’s women. Hope that people will teach their children to respect the indiscrete part of our life, the people because of whom we are here. Hope that people will do something in spite of passing on blame to others. Hope that people in authority would one day acknowledge their duties.

Hope that we shall overcome some day.

Jai Ma Bharti

Jai Hind, Jai bharat
