Yesterday an incident shook the whole of the nation,
throwing the whole Indian nation into despair and anger against the authority.
When the reports of death of 32 people came from Gandhi Maidan in Patna in
Bihar, the whole nation showed tremulous expression of horror. On one of the
greatest and most revered days in Hindu mythology, such an incident made the
whole nation weep.
Gandhi Maidan in Patna, Bihar has always been a great
place for big political rallies and function and the Dussehra celebrated in
Gandhi Maidan observes more than 1 lakh people every year. Yesterday too, on
the pious day of Vijaydashmi, more than 1 lakh people had flocked to see the
burning of effigy of Ravana and to observe the victory of good over evil. Even
Bihar’s Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi was present at the grand event and had
only left one hour ago before the pitiful accident.
When the celebrations were over, first of all no gates
were open for the dispersal of the mob and moreover some nasty people
circulated rumours that an electric wire has snapped out outside leading to
huge conflagration. People present in the Gandhi Maidan commenced running to
and fro and tried to get out of the place as soon as possible in order to save
their life leading to a huge stampede in which many women and children were
crushed under the feet of others taking the toll of death of people to around
32 and that of injured to more than 100. Many people were departed away from
their family members. Afterwards the police team came for the rescue and took
the injured people to the hospital only to find that the government hospitals
can’t even accommodate properly for medication of the victims of the disaster
and that there was also a lack of specialized team of doctors. Can anything be
worse than that? Heavily populated areas of Bihar don’t even have a good
hospital nearby where people could be treated if any unfortunate event takes
place.
This was not a simple accident which is to be forgotten
by the people. This was not the first occasion that such a huge function was
being organized. Every year more than 1 lakh people come to Gandhi Maidan to
observe the Dussehra event and therefore I believe that all such things took
place due to complete administrative disaster by the authorities. Earlier too,
in one of the rally of Mr. Narendra Modi, a bomb blast had occurred killing
around five people and injuring more than 66 people.
Previously in the event of Chat puja too such incident
took place injuring many people.
All these incidents clearly portray a complete dearth
of administrative management in Bihar. Parties continue to make and break
alliances in the state, but the bitter truth is that the government of Bihar is
not even able to manage a crowd of people congregated to see the Dussehra
event. Cops were not deployed correctly, no dispersal plan was there. Such a
security breach at a place where Bihar’s Chief Minister had himself come to
observe the event! Can anything be more heartrending than that? The event
managers were completely inefficacious and the government too was unable to
manage the people leading to loss of life of so many people and injuring many
too.
Although the state government has promised a
compensation of 3 Lakh and the Union government has promised to give the family
of the dead a sum of 2 Lakh and compensation has also been promised to the
family of injured but can you fill the loss of people with just a sum of money.
Can you compensate for the loss that a child will go through due to the loss of
his father in the stampede? Can you compensate the loss of child for a couple
who were there just to observe the Dussehra event? Many such accidents continue
to take place but the governments and administrative departments don’t just pay
any heed to them. People continue to die sans any fault but the officers and
government never think about them. Many previous calamities had been observed
at the same place before and even then the government did nothing to check the
whole security arrangement, for smooth dispersal of people and to stop some
scoundrels from circulating the rumors. Such a government and administrative
staff must resign for the sake of credibility and responsibility because death
of even person can lead to failure of his complete family and death of 32
people has paralyzed more than 100 more and those who are responsible for it
must be taken to the courts and justice should be given to the families of
bereft.
